  • This feature can be turned on by accident or when you put your device in battery-saving mode.
  • This guide explores the best ways to disable Google Chrome's Dark Mode on Windows and macOS by simply using the settings from the OS or the browser itself.

As one of the most popular browsers in the world, Google Chrome has seen a lot of changes, from looks to several features, in the past few years.

As you may very well know by now, Google Chrome has a Dark Mode on a variety of platforms. And while it seems like a good idea, the fact that it can turn on automatically or when you put your device in battery-saving mode has displeased some people.

Thus, users are now wondering how to turn off Google Chrome's Dark Mode when they can't find an option for it within the browser.

Why is Dark Mode so popular?

Also referred to as black or night mode, Dark Mode has been around since the 80s. If you're old enough to know what Teletext is, you'll remember that black screen and bright neon colors text on your TV.

Now, according to a Twitter poll for the Google Chrome team, people use Dark Mode because it's easier on the eyes, it's elegant and beautiful, and it consumes less battery.

Simply put, people often end up choosing Dark Mode, especially for its low-light settings as it could potentially reduce eye strain and dry eyes in low-light conditions.

And if you consider how much time we spend in front of a screen, you can understand why more and more users are choosing this feature.

Using Dark Mode in your browser is especially useful at night, reducing eye strain considerably. To avoid encountering such issues, we recommend that you try Opera as well.

Moreover, don't hesitate to take a look at some of the best browsers with Dark Mode. Switching between Light and Dark mode is always intuitive, even for newbies, so feel free to try them both and make a choice.

Light Mode vs Dark Mode

If we're talking about Star Wars, it's best to stay on the light side, but when it comes to your devices, researchers say that Dark Mode is the way to go.

With the arrival of CRT monitors that could emit brighter lights and colors and the advent of GUIs, Light Mode made its way into people's homes, pockets, and hearts.

This until some extensive research on the side effects of a white screen turned giants like Google to offer their products in dark mode, i.e. Google Chrome Dark Mode.

So, as with any trend that comes and goes, Light Mode made room for its sibling, and people turned to Dark Mode for more comfort, aesthetics, and improved battery life for their devices.

What are the advantages of Dark Mode?

Besides the sleek look, people with light sensitivity or visual impairment can benefit from Dark Mode as it's easier to read and look at a screen when the emitted light is low.

Recent studies also show that bright screens restrict the production of melatonin that is allowing the human body to get a good night's sleep:

Melatonin is a hormone that's made by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your daily sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin Levels and Production are affected by light and are reduced when exposed to blue light.

With Dark Mode, when browsing on your device, the light from your screen will be easier on the eyes, and in the long term, that is something to consider, especially if you work in front of a screen all day.

Yes, for some people it might not look right, but if you take into account the benefits and the fact that Dark Mode also enhances the battery life of your device, you might change your mind.
